The senior trip to Washington and New York was the highlight of the AHS Class of '58. Here is a copy of the brief itinerary that we were given before the trip. Both the Harrington and the Wellington hotels that we stayed in are still in business. In Washington, we poured water from the hotel window on pedestrians below. In New York, we visited the Automat and everyone but me went to Rockafellow Center to wave at the cameras on the NBC 'Today' show hosted by Dave Garraway. To their dismay, 'Today' was originating from Miami that week. I did not go because no one could wake me up from the cot I was sleeping on in our hotel room. This trip was one of the most sleep deprived events in my life.
We left the Abbeville Railroad Station on one of the trains of the now defunct Seaboard Air Line Railroad. Here is a picture of a napkin from our Seaboard train. I remember that we were appalled when the steward walked down the aisle of the train selling coffee for 25 cents a cup and Almond Joy candy bars for 50 cents. We made fun of him because he pronounced the 'Al' in Almond as one would pronounce the 'Al' in Alabama spoken in a southern drawl.
We are off to Washington and New York on the train. Jo Johnson pans for the camera, Johnny Lomax looks confidant, while Emily Kelly looks on. Sammy Furman is on the right.
Bobby Byrd carries what looks like a box of munchies as we leave Abbeville for the long ride to Washington. To his left is Mr. Dewey Goin, who was the Assistant Principal and one of our chaperones. Standing in the left background are Jesse Hall and Jimmy Rambo.
In front of the U.S. Capitol, we had a class picture made that measures 20 inches wide. Notice that the man on the left also appears on the right. This is the photographer. How did he do it? He used a camera that rotated slowly enough so that he could get his picture on the left, then run around ahead of the camera and have his picture on the right also.
This is a group shot that was made either in the hotel in New York or Washington. Mary Jo Canfield, Shirley Hill, Brenda Brodgen, Joyce Stewart, Jo Johnson, Bobby Byrd, and Jimmy Rambo pose for the camera.
Norma Higginbotham poses on a dresser in the New York hotel wearing shades and a cool straw hat. The guy on the bed was not a member of our class.
Our chaperone Miss Jackson is on the left as we ride the ferry around the New York harbor. We were more fascinsted looking at the disgusting things floating in the water than the scenes in the harbor. In the New York hotel, we played a dirty trick on Miss Jackson. I had bought a bottle of stink fluid at a novelty shop. We were walking behind Miss Jackson down the hotel hall and we liberally sprinkled the back of her jacket with the foul smelling stuff. She looked perplexed, turned around, and said, "Do you smell something?" We all laughed so hard that surely she must have known that we created it.
A weary crew heads back to Abbeville. Francis Knox, Brenda Brodgen, Miss Jackson, Marie Nance, Joyce Harrison, Bobby Byrd, Mary Charlotte Wilson, and Mary Gail Williams are visible in the crew.
Another shot at the weary crew. Emily Kelly, Marshall Leach, and Jo Johnson smile for the camera while Jimmy Rambo and Ralph Davenport seem annoyed by the flash bulb.
